Organic Beef FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

C.A.B.B. Farms has compiled these frequently asked questions about grass-fed, what it means, and why it’s better. If you don’t see an answer to your question about how we care for and raise our grass-fed beef and why it’s better for you, visit our resources page or contact us.

Yes! We believe we have a moral obligation to treat our animals with the utmost care and respect. Each cow is treated as an individual and as part of our family, receiving first class treatment.
Absolutely not. While we sometimes treat our sick cows with antibiotics, this is done sparingly and is very closely monitored. We never use any form of growth hormones.
“Grass-fed” means that our cattle eat only grass and other forages for their entire lives. These cattle will eat a variety of native grasses, clover, wildflowers, small shrubs, and hay harvested from the farm. Some “grass-fed” beef comes from cattle that are “grain-finished” to add fat and marbling, but our cattle are 100% grass-fed and 100% grass-finished. They never eat grain. They are never in a feedlot. Unlike the “Certified Organic” label, the “grass fed” claim is meaningless because it is not regulated in any way. We have seen producers that run a very conventional operation call their cattle as “grass fed” and enjoy the price that the unsuspecting consumer is willing to give them. The only way to ensure that you are truly getting grass-fed and -finished beef is to ask questions of your producer. Contact us if you have any questions about our processes.
When cows are grass-fed, they eat grass and clover which are rich in heart-healthy fatty acis, like Omega-3s. In fact, because they eat grass, C.A.B.B. Farms’ beef has about twice as many omega-3 fatty acids than a typical grain-fed steak has. Grass-fed beef also contains about 500% more Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) than grain-fed beef. CLA is another essential fatty acid that can act as an anti-carcinogenic, which not only reduces the likelihood of cancer, it actually suppresses the growth of cancer cells. Grass-fed beef also:
  • Increases immunity to certain diseases
  • Prevents heart disease
  • Increases bone density
  • Prevents obesity
  • Functions as an anti-diabetic
Yes! Grass is meant to be grazed. C.A.B.B. Farms’ grazing cows mimic wild animals by consuming the plants and spreading manure over the farm for nutrient cycling. This helps to increase plant diversity, reduce noxious weeds, and foster native plant growth. Our farms are never sprayed with chemicals.
Simply put, raising grass-fed and -finished takes time and “time is money”. Our cattle are almost 30 months old before they are market ready. Cattle fed very high-protein products, like corn and soy, may be market ready as young as 12 or 13 months of age. In order for the calves to grow that quickly, they are typically injected with growth hormones and kept on antibiotics to keep them healthy. Additionally, these cows typically live in huge feedlots where everything from the animals to the feed is shipped many miles. This may make economic sense for some, but C.A.B.B Farms believe the wait for grass-fed and finished beef is worth the wait. The cattle are healthier, the environmental impact is reduced, and we feel good about what we are doing and the product we’re supplying.
Absolutely not. While we sometimes treat our sick cows with antibiotics, this is done sparingly and is very closely monitored. We never use any form of growth hormones.
“Hanging weight” is the term used to describe the weight of a side of beef as it hangs up in a meat cooler with the usable cuts intact. Whole, halves and quarters are sold based on hanging weight. This hanging weight varies as cattle “finish. Some sides of beef are fatter or leaner than other sides of beef based on age, gender and genetics. Excess fat and bone are removed from the hanging side during cutting. 100% grass feeding typically creates a leaner cow than what grain feeding will.
